'A Written Contradiction' 2008
“Everything we see hides another thing; we always want to see what is hidden by what we see.”
Rene Magritte
A 'Written Contradiction’ plays with the Russian Doll scenario, 6 boxes in total, each fitting inside one another until safely hidden away. The project saw my first real clay exploration into puzzles, concealing elements and capitalising on the human condition of wanting to unpick and make sense of, to understand. We can become preoccupied in giving things reason, unpicking to discover why something exists or why an act has taken place. Does there always need to be a reason? It's a playful look at action and reaction, perhaps everything can be determined, nothing spontaneous. We like to think we have autonomy of thought and actions, maybe we do, I hope we do. The natural flow of life, nature and personality (environmental and hereditary) can map out actions, from small to large. I understand seeking purpose and seeking individuality. The project teased the viewers instinct to unpick.
The slab-built boxes are accompanied with porcelain tags, reading many a contradiction.
