Droplet Vases

I’ve been quietly working away mixing pigments into porcelain for years (See ‘Strength’ an artist residency I did in the USA in 2013) and my love for the colours achieved continues to grow. The ritual has developed over time and since 2023 has found its home in making coloured droplets, they look like smarties, and with a smooth finish, are incredibly tactile. I make wall and free-standing pieces using these repetitive forms in multiples. Ideas continues to develop and fuel me with excited exploration.

Colour can be so uplifting and has the power to impact your mood. The ebbs and flows of colour in nature, grey clouds verse sunny days, can be mirrored by that of our feelings and internal monologues.

These vessels are a natural three-dimensional, free-standing development from my kaleidoscope wall pieces. Each porcelain droplet is made separately and attached with slip to the body of the porcelain form.

Considering composition and how each element knits together and meets is a labour of love. Once complete, the piece is allowed to dry very slowly, over several weeks, to ensure each element dries at the same rate. The insides of each vessel are glazed with a clear glaze and outside designs and finishes vary. The magic of heat transforms the colours- you never quite know how each colour will come out.
