'All is Black s Really White' 2010

I stepped out of my comfort zone with this project, enlisting help from others, that was scary. Relying on others and asking for something is uncomfortable for me. Seeing my self-worth and overly worrying what others think was an challenge, it's safe to put yourself down, to keep yourself small.

'All is Black is Really White' was the most diverse series to date. Made up of 7 pieces, looking at scale and using a range of materials and technique I worked with a Waterjet cutter and accompanying computer software and I allowed myself to explore using bought materials. 'Slate Smile' was made using commercially made slate tile and 'Everybody Took', commercially made porcelain tile. The remaining 5 pieces are handmade using black stoneware and porcelain.

Interested in the contrast of hard ceramic and cushioned fabric, black and white clay, large and small pieces, the series explores these contrasts and how they work together. I enjoyed making the textile elements and mirrored this in the porcelain tags where lace has been imprinted into the surface. Leading on from 'Am I Still Your Charm', and still with a fascination in lettering and words, cryptic messages and puzzle like decoding, the boxes hold their own playful secrets.

‘Everybody Took’(45x45x45cm)
A large waterjet cut box made using porcelain tile and tied with twine. Each panel was designed and drawn out by hand, every reverse letter meticulous drawn by hand by yours truly. These drawings were then scanned into very clever software and transferred to the ceramic tiles, this is where help was enlisted.

In 2010 this piece was exhibited in London, 2011 in Newcastle and 2013 in Washington DC, USA- the baby went international.

‘Slate Smile’ (45x30x10cm)
Waterjet cut black slate lined with a handmade patchwork quilt and the home to the porcelain tags.
This is the only piece with a lid, she is the protector of the lace imprinted porcelain tags. These are made using a mixture of inhouse, handmade ceramic decays and bought custom ones.

‘You Can Be My Alphabet’ (25x25x25)
‘Words Fall Through Me’ (20x20x20)
‘Am I Still Your Charm II’ (15x15x15)

Slab-built, fabric lined porcelain boxes. Lettering is cut out, stamped in, drawn on and added to the surface.

‘Well I’m Rumbling’ (10x10x10)
'Smile' (10x10x10)
